His father, the third-generation Yamada Jozan, was a Living National Treasure. The younger Jozan learned his craft by observing his father rather than direct instruction. He views his creations as artistic pieces that blend beauty and functionality. His father believed that pursuing usability leads naturally to beauty, a principle Jozan follows in his work. Despite challenges in sourcing high-quality clay due to development in Tokoname, Jozan continues to produce exceptional pieces, thanks to a stockpile of fine clay accumulated by his predecessor.
