Charles Whittlesey - A major in the 77th Division, was in command of a battalion of 554 mean in October 1918 when they were ordered to attack the German lines in the Meuse-Argonne sector. In the confusion of the the attack, the units to both of Whittlesey's flanks failed to advance as far thus leaving his division cut-off from their supply and communication lines.
