River Birch (Betula nigra) has a cinnamon-colored, exfoliating bark. Lustrous, medium-green leaves. Most borer resistant birch. Tolerant of both wet soils and dry summers. Avoid very alkaline soils. Prune only when dormant and not when sap is flowing. Grows at a medium to fast rate, with height increases of anywhere from 13" to more than 24" per year.
