Picking a Winner (2014)

The 2014 poster artwork, Picking a Winner, shows a familiar scene played out more than a dozen times a day that is uniquely Saratoga: crowds of Saratoga Clubhouse patrons getting a final close look at the thoroughbreds and jockeys before the race. In this scene, track patrons are watching the 2013 Travers Stakes winner Will Take Charge and jockey Luis Saez make their way beneath the awnings and trees on their way from paddock to track. For more than ten years, my partner, Paula, has been suggesting that I showcase the beautiful and historic white ornamental ironwork columns and hand-carved horse head rafters that grace this corner of the Clubhouse. So, finally, here they are. The photos she took to help me with the column’s details are actually paper prints with negatives — talk about “historic”!
