Sony GV-D300 MiniDV deck - READ

This is a great MiniDV deck that I had in film school in the late 1990s. I used it with Final Cut Pro and a Mac to edit many of my short film projects. I've just tested the deck and it seems to work - with reservations. The first time I started it, the images played back with black bars across them. I think this may have been due to a bad cable or weird connection, because it did not reoccur during the rest of my testing. But sometimes the play button wouldn't work - I'd have to rewind the tape for a bit and then play for the play button to work. And with one tape, the machine gave me a "CAUTION" signal and would not play the tape. A different deck played the tape fine, but this machine repeatedly refused to play it.  These problems may be just a question of cleaning the heads or it might represent a bigger mechanical issue.
