During the "bar days" of Twisted Sister's career, Jay Jay French played his primary guitar—a 1978 Les Paul Standard with a Tobacco Burst finish. As Twisted Sister gained recognition for its distinctive black and pink color scheme branding, Jay Jay made a bold decision to paint his #1 Les Paul pink. Entrusting the task to renowned New York luthier Steve Carr, the guitar underwent a transformation, earning the name "the pinkburst." The guitar's unveiling took place on a night when Twisted Sister performed at the Stonybrook Madhatter club. In an unexpected move, Jay Jay, upon first sight of the guitar, punched its face with a giant ring on his hand, creating a noticeable gash near the volume knobs. This unconventional act was his way of preemptively adding character and perhaps protecting the instrument from any future damage Dee Snider might inflict.
