"In view of the political subserviency of Christians to party and mere political demagogues, as especially evinced in the history of the Mexican War" this Conference of Congregational Churches appointed a committee to study and report on any measures "that seem to be advisable, to enable Christians to regain their appropriate influence as citizens." The committee reports that the government of the United States is practically Infidel, that slavery is the great wrong, that citizens of the country are losing their rights, including trial by jury in the case of the suspected runaway, "be he black or white." It reports the the Louisiana
