This is the first edition to include an index of subjects. Thomas Maynard was the Superintendent of the Sunday School of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica, New York. He first conceived of compiling a hymnal for children in 1848, and the first edition of his hymnal was published in 1855. He was particularly interested in presenting songs that boys would enjoy singing. "And here we wish to remark that, in our opinion, one of the important results which have accrued from the late
