Urban Aviaries
From the artist: “What began as an exhibition style extension of my ‘Aerie Series’, evolved into a much more complicated endeavor. In this body of work, I get a chance to push myself with new forms and the precision of fitting pieces together, both hot and cold. While, technically, it is an opportunity to revisit past interests in hot-sculpting as well as embracing my recent background in tableware production, the juxtaposition of both techniques offers intriguing narratives contained in these “urban” aviaries.” Each piece is “assembled hot,” meaning the internal birds and foliage are fused to the vessel at around 2000°F. There are no adhesives or other materials used to making these challenging sculptures. Like assembling a ship in a bottle, it takes a bit of magic to create each piece and, of course, a coordinated team! Each piece has a separate lid which is removable but serves to keep dust out of the form so you need not worry about getting in there to clean! D^W
