Opuntia basilaris - Beavertail Prickly Pear Cactus
Opuntia basilaris A beloved prickly pear, Beavertail Cactus is known for its bright magenta blooms and attractive blue-gray pad coloration. These are small, well-behaved, low-spreading cactus. A single plant may contain hundreds of fleshy, flattened pads, that resemble a beaver’s tail, often heart-shaped. Pads do not contain long spines, however, areoles do contain numerous short glochids (hair-like spines) that are brown to black. Magenta to purple-colored blooms form in spring. Easily kept smaller with selective, periodic pad removal. Container indoor/outdoor houseplant in all zones.
