Puʻu Lokuana, now a grassy hill, was once a pile of hot cinders rained down from a lava fountain here on the flank of Mauna Loa. Grasses brought into this landscape during the ranching heyday of the late 1800s - early 1900 create "lawns" that now serve as the preferred wintering territories for migrating Pacific golden plovers, or kōlea. In spring these long-distance flyers depart these protected areas to breed in western Alaska. Distance and time: 2 miles (3.2 km) round trip, 1-1.5 hours Product dimensions 1x 1 1/4 inches
