Kamehameha Butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) This is one of only two species of butterfly that are native to Hawaiʻi. The Hawaiian name is pulelehua. Its English and latin names refers to the royal house of Kamehameha I, who was the first monarch of a unified Hawaiʻi. In 2009 it was named the State Insect of Hawaiʻi. As a caterpillar it feeds primarily on the Hawaiian nettle plant, mamaki, but when it transforms into a butterfly it is an important pollinator for a great many native Hawaiian plants.
