Queen Quilt - Ohi'a Lehua

Ohi'a Lehua inspires expressions of love and beauty through Hawaiian storytelling, poetry, hula, and mele (song). Ohi'a wood was used for tools, weapons, and carving symbols of Hawaiian gods. If the Ohi'a Lehua was picked in ancient times it was thought to anger the "Goddess of Pele" and bring rain. Hawaiian quilting patterns traditionally reflected objects of nature or even everyday household objects which evoke the memory of loved ones. Objects such as plumeria blossoms, hair combs worn by Princess Kalulane, or a ginger lei. In general Hawaiian quilt patterns do not use humans or animals.
