This ikat was handmade on the island of Sumba in Indonesia during the middle of the 20th century. Ikat is a warp-resist dyeing technique similar to "tie-dyeing". It is a narrative textile that was likely intended for a wedding. It features various scenes of what appears to be a bride and groom arm in arm as well as on horseback and an animal being prepared for a feast. In a very large and unusual format with a palette of ivory, black, yellow, and blue.
