Japanese ema or votive are small wooden plaques common to Japan in which Shinto and Buddhist worshippers write prayers or wishes. The ema are left hanging up at the shrine where the kami (spirits) are believed to receive them. This particular image is of a monkey - possibly taken from the zodiac.  Mid 1900sDimensions: 9" wide by 8" long
