Also known as queen of the meadow, meadowsweet is an aromatic perennial in the rose family. Its large clusters of small, creamy white flowers bloom throughout the summer with the sweet fragrance of almond. Meadowsweet was traditionally used to flavor mead. In fact, its name originally meant "mead sweetener" and its pleasant aroma made it a popular strewing herb in the Middle Ages.  With its sweet, almond-like aroma, dried meadowsweet is often used in herbal teas and tinctures and, sometimes, as a substitute for almond flavoring in the kitchen. Medicinally, meadowsweet flowers contain a small amount of salicylic acid, the compound used to develop aspirin, and have traditionally been used for inflammation and pain relief, in particular pain associated with arthritis and the flu. Meadowsweet does not have the same effect as aspirin; however, people who have an allergy or sensitivity to aspirin or salicylates should avoid meadowsweet.
