Here is an excerpt from Rachel Weaver's book Backyard Pharmacy in the chapter on Calendula: "In World War I, Dr. Petrie Hoyle used calendula almost exclusively for treating wounds in a front-line hospital. He found that it prevented pus from forming. His wards were known for their absence of smell and very clean wounds. He received praise for rapid cure of all kinds of septic (infected) wounds among his soldiers."
