Historically, the leaves are chewed up and then used as a poultice on top of wounds to help stop bleeding. Modern science has confirmed many of Yarrow’s traditional medicinal properties. Its healing ability comes mostly from the alkaloid achilleine, which helps wounds heal over by encouraging blood clotting. Its Latin name, Achillea millefolium, has its roots in the legend of it being the healing herb of Achilles. According to Greek myth, there was an herb with such potent healing properties that the hero Achilles used it to treat the wounds of his soldiers. Today, historians and botanists agree that the herb described in Homer’s Iliad was Yarrow. Yarrow flowers and leaves are traditionally used in the treatment of slow healing wounds.
