The first baseball clubs in Puerto Rico were founded in the late 1890’s. The first two organized teams were called the Almendares and the Borinquen. In 1928 the first Puerto Rican appeared in the Negro Leagues; Patillas born Emilio “Millito” Navarro who played for the Cuban Stars. In 1942 we saw the first Puerto Rican in the Major Leagues; San Juan born Hiram Bithorn who joined the Chicago Cubs. Since 1938 an organized winter baseball league has existed on the island. Legendary ball players such as Josh Gibson and Hank Aaron played for teams on this league. Today that league is known as the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente and has seven active teams. The winner of the league goes on to Represent Puerto Rico in the Serie del Caribe. The league’s name honors the “Great One,” Roberto Clemente.
