Its resemblance to the P-51 Mustang caught the U.S. Army Air Forces' attention. They ordered 83 aircraft under the military designation L-17A for training, liaison missions, personnel transport, and cargo operations. When Ryan Aeronautical Company acquired the design, they enhanced it with the L-17B military version, powered by a robust 205-horsepower Continental engine.
