Black Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia fulgida, aka Orange Coneflower. USDA zones 3-9. Native to all of the Eastern US, and much of the Midwest and South. It is an herbaceous perennial that does well in both dry and moist soils in full sun or partial shade. Grows 2-3' tall, often forming colonies in the wild. It has daisy-like flowers with yellow rays and brownish-purple center disks. It has strong bloom production over a long mid-summer to fall bloom period, and is a good cut flower. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and other insect pollinators. No serious insect or disease problems. Deer tend to avoid this plant.
