These Macedonian silver drachms were minted in the name of Alexander III, better known as Alexander the Great. The coins depict Alexander as the Greek hero Herakles, with a lion skin draped over his head, as well as a seated image of the god Zeus on the reverse side. Due to his popularity as a ruler, silver coins like this continued to be issued in Alexander's name for up to two centuries after his death. Though some of these coins can be definitively identified as lifetime or posthumous issues based on subtle details, such as the placement of Zeus' legs or the presence of certain small symbols, this is not always an exact science. Alexander's military prowess firmly cemented him into legend. At just sixteen, Alexander lead the Macedonian army to a swift win against a Thracian uprising.
