Years: 1863 to 1868 (Late Edo Period) Denomination: 4 Mon Obverse: 文久永寶 (Bunkyūeihō) Reverse: 11 waves These coins were put into circulation in the 2nd month of the 3rd year of Bunkyū era, hence their name. They were made by melting down copper 1 mon Kan'ei Tsuho coins, as Japan faced a copper shortage and began inflating its currency. Though these new 4 mon coins were only slightly bigger than their 1 mon predecessors, the Japanese population eagerly accepted them to fuel their economy.
