Thrace, Cherronesos, Hemidrachm (#5) - 386 to 338 BCE - Greece

To be clear: these hemidrachms from Cherronesos were NOT minted under Alexander the Great. We thought we'd include them in this week's special offer as a bonus though! Origin: These silver coins were worth one hemidrachm (1/2 drachm) and were struck in the Greek colony of Cherronesos in Thrace. They show a lion on the obverse, while the reverse is divided into four quadrants with various symbols. Thrace was a region in southeastern Europe that encompassed parts of modern-day Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. Although the Thracians were considered a different cultural group separate from the Greeks, there were many Greek trading colonies established in Thrace on the coast of the Black Sea and many of these towns issued Greek currency such as this.
