The first aircraft carrier commissioned by the surface forces of the People's Liberation Army Navy was initially classified as a training ship designed to allow the Navy to experiment, train and get acquainted with the operations of the aircraft carrier. Originally laid down in 1985 for the Soviet Navy as a Riga-class aircraft cruiser, she was launched on December 4, 1988 and renamed Varyag in 1990.
