The tree grows to 20 meters in height and is an evergreen which is long-living. The whole tree exudes a spicy smell. Cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices. The tree is cultivated in Seychelles and Mauritius as well. When the tree is 6-8 years old, the bark is removed in strips and left to dry in the sun. The tree can produce bark for up to 200 years.
