This cabbage variety has some of the best, bright burgundy colors of any red cabbage variety. Red Jewel produces heads that average 6" in diameter and 3-3.5 lbs. The heads are extremely uniform along the row. This is an extremely versatile variety that's great for fresh eating, cooking, canning, and pickling. Use it to make your favorite coleslaw or cabbage and sausage soup. It also is a great variety for fermenting and making homemade sauerkraut. Cabbage will grow best in areas where weeds are kept to a minimum. It is moderately frost-tolerant and performs better when planted in cooler weather. Cabbage will tend to bolt in warmer temperatures. Plant cabbage early in spring for a late spring/early summer harvest, or plant in late summer/early fall for a fall harvest.
