Crystal Silence is one of Chick's few ballads, a beautiful classic found on the Crystal Silence album with Gary Burton, and on the album called Return to forever (not the group). Holmquist made it to a big soprano sax feature with lush, dense voicings and plenty of room for the soloist, including a cadenza near the end. There is plenty of variation and development of the theme and a piano solo where "time stands still". A perfect vehicle for your soprano soloist and a crowd pleaser at every concert! "However it is Holmquist's inventive arrangements, which are a logical extension of Corea's original performances, that are the real stars. Recommended.”
