The inspiration for this piece was Alvin Ailey’s iconic ballet, “Revelations.” The power of this painting is in the unity of purpose and feeling. African Americans have always had to make a way out of no way when it came to a lot of endeavors, including surviving the brutal racial culture following Reconstruction and the onset of Jim Crow. Some times we have to look to the heavens for mercy and grace.
