Thoth, in Egyptian religion, a god of the moon, of reckoning, of learning and of writing. He was held to be the inventor of writing, creator of languages, scribe, interpreter, advisor of the gods and the representative of the sun god Re. He is often depicted as a man with a head of an Ibis. Being the god of the written word, he is regarded as the author of books such as 'Books of the Dead' and the 'Book of Breathings' which consist of spells used in Ancient Egypt.
