DESCRIPTION This is a handmade sculpture of the Orisha Sango, a powerful male deity and warrior-king in Yoruba land, popularly known as the god of thunder. According to Yoruba mythology, Sango was the third king of the Oyo kingdom with voice like thunder and a mouth that spewed fire when he spoke. His symbol is a double-headed axe which represents swift and balanced justice. He was known to be a powerful ruler who brought prosperity to the Oyo empire. He gained the powers to control thunder & lightning and was subsequently possessed by the spirit of lightning. Sango never died, marking his ascendance into an Orisha (deity) along with his favorite wife Oya. Sango’s worship is still active and continues to this day not only throughout Africa but also in places like Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, etc. Each Orisha in Yoruba land represents particular ideas, objects or natural phenomena.
