It occurs when calcium, boron and silicon are readily available in an aqueous solution that begins to dry up. As the solution dries up, the minerals come together to form crystals. Howlite typically forms in irregular nodules that resemble cauliflower. It is typically white with fine gray, black, or brown veining. Small, translucent crystals of howlite have been reported, however this type of formation is quite rare. Howlite is commonly used to make decorative objects such as small carvings or jewelry. Because of its porous texture, howlite can be easily dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise because of the similar appearance of the veining patterns.
