c. 1870s-1890s; A.H. Andrews Co. - Chicago Oak and wrought iron double school bench with rear desk. This piece was salvaged from an abandoned school in the Midwest. It was fabricated by A.H. Andrews, a prominent Chicago-based manufacturer of school furniture and theater seating. The desk features a grooved seat and back rest, giving some early ergonomic support. The cast iron hardware is a deep black and and includes intricate scrollwork. The embossed "4" on the cast iron refers to the recommended age group for this particular desk, which is "First Intermediate" or ages 10-13. This desk is able to fold up to save on space.
