c. 1910s; Hedman Manufacturing Co. - Chicago Antique Hedman F&E Check-Writer, Model D. This piece is described by the Made in Chicago Museum as a "hi-tech defense weapon" as its creation came from a need to combat a serious issue of the day: check forgery. Prior to the invention of check writing machines, it was simple for swindlers and conmen to simply add an extra "y" to a paycheck prior to cashing so that a check for $8,000 became a check for $80,000. This piece features adjustable number dials and a large lever to stamp information on the front of a check. Exhibits moderate signs of wear and is in an unknown working condition. 5" W x 7.5" D x 10.5" H Please refer to photos regarding condition.
