Alterations in Sales Although the womenswear market suffered during most of 2020, 2021 sales increased dramatically, and into 2022. Q1 2022 sales totaled $8.81 billion, a 16.8% YOY increase, according to the US Census Bureau. According to Placer.ai, discount and off-price apparel performed well during 2021. Sales in the category increased 3.3% YOY for the week ending 5/30/22 while overall apparel retail sales decreased 4.7% YOY during the same week. As the pandemic wanes, more Americans are improving their wardrobes for work and leisure activities. The NPD Group reported dress sales increased 42% YOY from January through May 2022, with approximately one-third of those purchases for special occasions.
