Description  ChallengeWhile lecturing is a mainstay of the face-to-face classroom, faculty often fail to realize that the same lecture--useful in the face-to-face classroom will probably not be watched by students online. Simply put, the online classroom is different. In the face-to-face classroom, social conventions and physical proximity enhance students' attention. The face-to-face classroom is a time-managed environment in which students are conditioned to provide time-limited engagement to classroom activities. In contrast, the online classroom is a click-and-go online environment that is outcome-managed. Rather than directing their attention as a function of time, students are guided by outcomes…, and they will seek the resources or materials that allow them to achieve the learning objectives in the most efficient way possible. If students are not actively engaged by a video (or do not believe that a video adds value to the learning experience), they will not watch it.
