In the 1950s, at the age of 22, I lived in a time when wives were expected to defer to their husbands' opinions and desires. During the first year of my marriage, I enrolled in an art class at the Museum of Modern Art here in New York City and was eager to explore my creative spirit. When I began sharing my work with my new husband, he dismissed it outright, insisting I should abandon the class.
