Original Spanish 17th Century Comb Morion Helmet

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a gorgeous Spanish example of one of the most romantic helmets, usually found in connection to the New World. COMB MORIONS were used all over Europe especially in the various German States, England, France and Italy. A Morion is a type of open-faced combat helmet originally from Spain, used from the beginning of the 16th century to the early-17th century. The morion usually had a flat brim and a crest running from front to back. Its introduction was contemporaneous with European exploration of much of North, Central and South America - explorers such as Hernando de Soto and Coronado may have supplied morions to their foot-soldiers in the 1540s. This lovely example is fluted along the brim of the helmet and along the edge of the comb, a lovely design detail very characteristic of Spanish Morions from this period. Of the original 14 rivets that were affixed to the helmet, there are still twelve retained, but there is no remnant of the original line
