This is a wonderful example of the classic Springfield trapdoor rifle, the weapon used, in its carbine form, by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked: U.S. MODEL 1873 Offered in very nice used condition is this trapdoor rifle in 45-70 government caliber. Serial # 79543 with a very worn stock cartouche, overall very good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates that it was built at Springfield in 1878, and the stock appears to be original. The number "4" is stamped above the butt plate and again below the barrel tang. The stock is worn, particularly under the sight, which has some grooving due to finger wear. There is also a sliver of wood missing next to the barrel tang, and the right rear sight ear is missing.
