On the day of the actual marriage ceremony the groom was escorted by his brothers in the solemn equestrian procession depicted here, from his house to the Palace, where he was received by his father Shah Jahan in the Diwan-i-Aam and given ceremonial presents. Since the event took place in the evening, the Palace was illuminated by various forms of illumination (seen in the picture) used in that period.
