In Hawaiian, lau means both leaf and design—a layered meaning that captures the poetry of our ʻōlelo mākuahine (mother tongue). This nail design is woven from the leaves of plants cherished by kānaka maoli for food, medicine, lei, and ceremony: Lauaʻe – fragrant, often braided into lei ʻUlu – breadfruit, a symbol of abundance and sharing Hōʻiʻo – fern, gathered for food and adornment Each nail becomes a leaf, and together, they form a design that honors both tradition and beauty—nā lau in every sense of the word.
