It is based on the 6502C microprocessor which runs at 1.79 MHz. Initially it was available with either 8K or 16K of RAM, which was expandable to 48K. Later on it came with 48K as standard. The Atari 800 came with a full-size keyboard and two easily accessible cartridge slots, which allowed you to plug in software cartridges.
