At no time is mountain snow deeper in Montana than during early spring. After six months of cold weather, the alpine country is dressed almost entirely in white, patiently waiting while days grow longer and the weather slowly warms.  For this photo, I snowshoed into Beehive Basin in the Spanish Peaks to take a wintry version of my summer photo, Celestial Rainbow. I camped in a "tree well," an area of less snow at the base of a massive white bark pine, getting up at 3am to begin this shoot when my thermometer showed less than 10 degrees.  During this clear night, the snow had a beautiful glow, softly reflecting the light of millions of stars overhead. This time of year, the Milky Way becomes visible lower on the horizon, its arc flatter, and its core appears a bit further north than during the summer months. The pond where our galaxy is reflected during summer nights here was completely frozen over with five feet of snow guarding the ice.  This is another of my custom-edition prints wit
