The Story Behind It Is Well: “Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul” With this hymns’ comforting power across centuries, few know the heart wrenching story of its composition. Lawyer and young Christian businessman Horatio Spafford lost much of his fortune in the great Chicago fire and in the autumn of 1873 he had planned a trip to Europe for his wife and four daughters to relax away from the stresses of America. At the last minute Horatio was forced to stay behind but sent his family on ahead of him seeking not to ruin their vacation. On November 22nd the ship was struck and sunk over the Atlantic leaving his wife as the only survivor. As Horatio sailed to retrieve his daughters he penned the lyrics of “It is Well” as his ship crossed the spot where they perished.
