Stumps Suck Timber companies and the US Forest Service are using the horrors of recent wildfires as an excuse to make it easier to clearcut more forests, particularly the large old-growth trees, which are more profitable to cut down. But the large trees resist fires with their thick bark, and they store carbon in their roots and branches and bark and needles, and they are the habitat of birds and voles and owls and bugs.  There are problems with the risk of fire, but the answer is selective logging and keeping wetlands and streams. Clearcuts are the problem. Not the answer.    Artwork by Tom Ingham
