This intricate brass and milk glass inkwell is a souvenir from the May 1st, 1899 performance of "Way Down East" at the Chestnut Street Theatre. The Chestnut Street theatre was a prominent social hub of Philadelphia, operating from 1880 to 1940. It is located in modern day Center City. "Way Down East" is a play written by Lottie Blair Parker, a notable playwright and actress during the turn of the century.
