Friargavor - JP3163
The province of Halsingland is just north of the central area of Sweden, Dalorna. It is an area known for the growing of flax, from which linen is made. Friargavor is the Swedish term for a love gift, a special token of affection, usually made by a gentleman hoping to catch the eye of a certain young woman. The box is a reproduction of one that I saw in the Nordiska Museum in Stockholm, a lovely sized woman’s workbox. This box is completed by a small pincushion of painted linen, which could be used to keep her sewing needles or her small hat and jewelry pins.
