ATTELL, MONTE ORIGINAL MOUNTED PHOTOGRAPH
Monte Attell was born in San Francisco on July 28, 1885. His first professional fight was a win over Danny Tankel on December 10, 1902. On March 29, 1905 he fought Jimmy Walsh in Philadelphia in a fight billed for the bantamweight championship. AP reports state Attell carried from ring after an accidental low blow. Daily Kennebec Journal reports Attell awarded the bout because of the low blow--Boston Globe agrees--also Walsh and his seconds were arrested by order of a Captain Thompson. Referee McGuigan announced that Walsh had fouled Attell. Walsh was dominating the fight and the low blow was clearly accidental--"An easy victory for Walsh was assured until after two minutes and 35 seconds of the last round had expired, when the foul was committed." Boston Globe. It certainly appears from this report that Attell was awarded the fight on a foul. Walsh claims bantamweight title off of many wire reports that had him winning by TKO.
