Live Edge Bench: Santa Cruz Bay Laurel

This slab comes from a Bay Laurel tree that was felled and logged near Santa Cruz, CA. Filled with a range of natural tones from cool beige to medium golden brown, we felt it would be the perfect addition to our Live Edge Bench series.  In this Bench series, each base is created with a set of signature pier-inspired legs. Extending up from back leg are back posts, stable and slightly flexible: a playful and comfortable feature to support each uniquely designed back rest. In dreaming up a unique back rest for this particular slab, we chose to lean into a 'woven wood' aesthetic. Manipulating sheets of thin white oak, we created two wide slats that slip directly over the back posts -- from a flat slat at one end, the wood splits as if river water were to flow in two paths around an island, and it comes back to form one piece again. When seated, these slats comfortably support the lower to mid back.
