Henry Chalfant is best known for his photography and films that captured graffiti and hip hop culture in New York City during the 1970s and 80s. During this period, with respect to graffiti and hip hop art and culture, New York was the center of the universe. Due to the quick turn-around and ephemeral nature of the art itself, Chalfant's photographs act as the only lasting proof of some of the most important graffiti art in history, and art that no longer exists. His work captures the essence of the movement and spirit of youth culture during these times.
